deep cut: addys

This time last year, like many years before it, I was in the midst of my favorite season: awards season.

Since awards shows typically happen early in the year, they went largely as planned in 2020, right before live, in-person events pivoted to virtual or were canceled entirely. The local ADDYs (a.k.a. the American Advertising Awards, a.k.a. the Oklahoma Oscars of Advertising) had the same fate—their live event went off without a hitch last year, and they had ample time to plan for a virtual event for 2021. This year’s theme was, aptly, “The Show Will Go On.”

We’ve participated in the Oklahoma ADDYs on and off over the years, but this year we were one of the event sponsors and produced some of the show’s animations. We got to work with new people, namely Hannah Landry, 2021 OKC ADDYs Chair and Director of Account Services at Krush in OKC, but we also got to reconnect with a longtime friend and colleague, Randy Kemp of RK-1 Productions, who provided the voiceover work.

The creative department at Krush designed an Art Deco-style logo, which we animated and used as inspiration for an intermission countdown, category award announcements, and a few other animations as well. We tried to encapsulate the excitement and glamour of a typical awards show, using elements like ticket stubs, theatre curtains, and vintage film cameras. We wanted the virtual audience to still feel fancy, even if most of them watched in sweatpants. ;)

Here’s a mini reel of the ADDYs animations we produced:
